What is it used for?

It’s typically used in three-phase residential systems and smaller C&I (commercial and industrial) installations, where the goal is to maximize self-consumption and minimize grid feed-in. Thanks to its DC-side capacity of up to 20 kWp, it’s well-suited for larger roofs with panels facing multiple orientations.

Thanks to its EPS operation, it supplies designated loads with three-phase power during a power outage, making it a good choice for locations where backup power is not an option but a requirement (e.g., homes with heat pumps, small offices, workshops). It is also suitable for microgrid and self-consumption-optimized setups, as it supports SG Ready, DRM, and Ripple Control.

How does it work?

The inverter collects solar energy using three independent MPPT trackers, allowing it to optimize three strings with different orientations or shading levels separately. The generated energy is first used to power the load, then to charge the battery, and only the remainder is fed into the grid (if permitted)—you configure this logic via the FoxCloud interface.

It communicates with the HV battery via CAN bus and operates in the 100–800 V range with a maximum charging/discharging current of 50 A. In the event of a power outage, it switches to EPS mode within a few tens of milliseconds, ensuring that the designated circuits receive power with virtually no interruption. It uses a smart meter for grid measurement, which allows for precise control of power input and neutral point regulation.

Technical and System-Level Benefits

Due to the maximum panel-side power of 20 kWp, it allows for a 2:1 DC oversizing ratio, which results in significant additional yield in the local climate during winter and in the mornings and evenings. The three MPPT trackers and the high DC voltage, which reaches up to 950 V, enable flexible string design, so compromises in roof layout are rarely necessary.

On the battery side, capacity can be scaled using FoxESS’s proprietary HV modules, and the high-voltage architecture provides better overall efficiency than low-voltage systems. With a maximum efficiency of 97.9% and a European efficiency rating of 97.2%, the system is ready for virtually all modern grid services (SG Ready, DRM, Ripple Control), and communication can be handled via Ethernet, Wi-Fi/LAN/Bluetooth, and optional 4G.

Differences

Within the H3 Smart series, the 10.0 is the highest-performance model that still features passive (fanless) cooling: it stays below 40 dB, so you can safely install it in residential environments. The 12 kW and 15 kW models above it feature active, fan-based cooling, which means louder operation alongside higher performance.

The 9.9 kW sibling model is virtually identical but is designed for markets or electrical codes where the power rating must remain below 10 kW. If there is no such restriction, the 10.0 model—with its higher rated and peak power (11,000 VA)—is the more logical choice.

Important to know

The inverter operates exclusively with high-voltage (HV) batteries; it is not compatible with low-voltage (LV) battery packs—this must be clarified during the design phase. AFCI arc fault protection is an option on this model, not standard equipment. The 10.0 is the right choice if you have a three-phase connection and a solar array of around 8–20 kWp for which you also want storage and backup.
